Depression -- Traditional vs. Alternative Treatments

Every day there are millions of people who are feeling blue and would like to know how to cure their depression. 

Some people feel depressed for just a day or two and then start to feel better without any intervention.  But many people aren’t so lucky and they find their blue mood getting worse.  If you're feeling depressed, know that there are a number of treatments today that have been found to be effective, although you might have to try several methods before finding one that works for you. 

 Do Traditional Treatments Work?

Traditional treatment for depression usually consists of antidepressant medication and psychotherapy.   A number of studies have been performed that support this treatment regimen, as many of these studies have found that a combination of antidepressants and psychotherapy can alleviate and even cure depression. 

This combination of antidepressant medication and psychotherapy has long been thought to be the only answer to the question of how to cure depression.  These same studies have also found that when the treatment is stopped the depression usually returns.   The downside of traditional treatment regimen is that the medication must usually be continued indefinitely. 

Recent studies have found that a large percentage of depressed patients don’t respond to antidepressants, and many stop taking them due to the unpleasant side effects.  So the traditional treatment of antidepressants doesn’t work for everyone. 

Psychotherapy, on the other hand, has proven to be a very effective treatment for antidepressant.  One of the most effective methods used in psychotherapy is cognitive-behavioral therapy.  Therapists have found that many depressed persons find their mood lifts substantially when they find new ways of thinking about situations and life in general.  Changing behavior can also help lift a depressed mood.
